Can't You See

Gonna take a freight train Down at the station,

Lord I don't care where it goes

Gonna climb a mountain The highest mountain

Jump off, nobody gonna know

Can't you see, whoa, can't you see

What that woman, Lord, she been doin' to me

Can't you see, can't you see

What that woman, she been doin' to me

I'm gonna find me a hole in the wall

I'm gonna crawl inside and die

'Cause my lady, now A mean ol' woman, Lord

Never told me goodbye

Can't you see, oh, can't you see

What that woman, Lord, she been doin' to me

Can't you see, can't you see

What that woman, Lord, she been doin' to me

I'm gonna buy a ticket, now As far as I can

Ain't a-never comin' back

Ride me a southbound All the way to Georgia, now

Till the train, it run out of track

Can't you see, oh, can't you see

What that woman, Lord, she been doin' to me

Can't you see, can't you see

What that woman, she been doin' to me

Cat's in the Cradle

My child arrived just the other day;

he came into the world in the usual way.

But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.

He learned to walk while I was away.

And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it.  And as he grew he'd say,

"I'm gonna be like you, Dad. You know I'm gonna be like you."

My son turned ten just the other day.

He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad.  Come on, let's play.

Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today.

I got a lot to do."  He said, "That's okay."

And he   walked away, but his smile never dimmed.

He said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah. You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you comin' home Dad?"  "I don't know when,

but we'll get together then, Son.

You know we'll have a good time then."

Well, he came home from college just the other day,

so much like a man I just had to say,

"Son, I'm proud of you.  Can you sit for a while?"

He shook his head and he said with a smile,

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys.

See you later.  Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you comin' home Son?"  "I don't know when,

but we'll get together then, Dad.

You know we'll have a good time then."

I've long since retired, my son's moved away.

I called him up just the other day.

I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."

He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I could find the time.

You see, my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu,

but it's sure nice talkin' to you, Dad.  It's been sure nice talkin' to you."

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me,

he'd grown up just like me. My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you comin' home Son?"  "I don't know when,

but we'll get together then, Dad.

You know we'll have a good time then."

Circle Game

Yesterday a child came out to wonder

Caught a dragonfly inside a jar

Fearful when the sky was full of thunder

And tearful at the falling of a star

Then the child moved ten times 'round the seasons

Skated over ten clear frozen streams

Words like, when you're older, must appease him

And promises of someday make his dreams

CHORUS:

And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round

And the painted ponies go up and down

We're captured on a carousel of time

We can't return, we can only look

behind from where we came

And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now

Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town

And they tell him, take your time it won't be long now

'Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down

CHORUS

So the years spin by and now the child is twenty

Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true

There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty

Before the last revolving year is through

Verse: C, F, C . . . C, F, G . . . C, F, Em . . . F, G, C (G, C)

Chorus: C, F, C C, F, C . . . F, C . . . F, Em, F, Em, F, G, C

Clumsy

Throw away the radio Suitcase that keeps you awake

Hide the telephone, the telephone, telephone in case

You realize that sometimes you're just not okay

You level off, you level off, you level off

But it's not alright now You need to understand

There's nothing strange about this You need to know your friends

You need to know that

I'll be waving my hand Watching you drown

Watching you scream Quiet or loud

And maybe you should sleep And maybe you just need A friend

as clumsy as you've been There's no one laughing

You will be safe in here You will be safe in here

Throw away this very old shoelace That tripped you again

Try and shrug it off, shrug it off, shrug it off It's only skin now

You need to understand There's nothing fake about this

You need to let me in I'm watching you and

I'll be waving my hand Watching you drown

Watching you scream No one's around

And maybe you should sleep And maybe you just need A friend

as clumsy as you've been There's no one laughing

You will be safe in here You will be safe in...

ooh ooh ooh ....

I'll be waving my hand Watching you drown

Watching you scream Quiet or loud

And maybe you should sleep And maybe you just need A friend

as clumsy as you've been There's no one laughing

You will be safe in here You will be safe in here

You will be safe in here In here, in here, in here

Cool Change

If there's one thing in my life that's missing

It's the time that I spend alone

Sailing on the cool and bright clear water

There's lots of those friendly people

They're showing me ways to go

But I never want to lose their inspiration

CHORUS:

Time for a Cool change

I know that it's time for a Cool change

And now that my life is so prearranged

I know that it's time for a Cool change

Well, I was born in the sign of water

And it's there that I feel my best

The albatross and the whales they are my brothers

It's kind of a special feeling

When you're out on the sea alone

Staring at the full moon like a lover

CHORUS

BRIDGE:

I've never been romantic and sometimes I don't care

I know it may sound selfish but let me breathe the air

Daniel

Daniel is riding tonight on the plane

I can see the red tail light heading for Spain,

oh and . . . I can see Daniel waving goodbye

God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eye

They say Spain is pretty though I’ve never been

Daniel says it’s the best place he’s ever been

And he should know he’s been there enough

Oh, I miss Daniel, Oh I miss him so much

Oh, oh, oh, Daniel my brother, your are older than me

Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won’t heal?

Your eyes have died, but you see more than I

Daniel you’re a star in the face of the sky

Daniel is riding tonight on the plane

I can see the red tail light heading for Spain,

oh and . . . I can see Daniel waving goodbye

God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eye

Dead Flowers

Well, when you're sitting there in your silk upholstered chair

Talkin' to some rich folk that you know

Well, I hope you won't see me in my ragged company

Well, you know I could never be alone

Take me down little Susie, take me down

I know you think you're the queen of the underground

And you can send me dead flowers every morning

Send me dead flowers by the mail

Send me dead flowers to my wedding

And I won't forget to put roses on your grave

Well, when you're sitting back in your rose pink Cadillac

Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day

Ah, I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon

And another girl to take my pain away

Take me down little Susie, take me down

I know you think you're the queen of the underground

And you can send me dead flowers every morning

Send me dead flowers by the mail

Send me dead flowers to my wedding

And I won't forget to put roses on your grave

Take me down little Susie, take me down

I know you think you're the queen of the underground

And you can send me dead flowers every morning

Send me dead flowers by the U.S. Mail

Say it with dead flowers in my wedding

And I won't forget to put roses on your grave

No, I won't forget to put roses on your grave

Drift Away

Day after day I'm more confused
Yet I look for the light through the pourin' rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
And I'm feeling the strain
Ah, ain't it a shame?

CHORUS

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your Rock 'n' Roll
And drift away

Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your Rock 'n' Roll
And drift away

Won't you take me away?

Beginnin' to think that I'm wastin' time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
And I'm countin' on you
You can carry me through

CHORUS

And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
When I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's coming through to soothe me

Thanks for the joy that you're givin' me
(Oh, the joy that you're givin' me)
I want you to know I believe in your song
(Oh, yeah)

Rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along (makin' me strong)
Ah, you're makin' me strong

CHORUS

Open: A, E, D, A

Verse: D, A, D, A, D, A, Bm, D

Chorus: A, E, D, A, E, D, A ...

Every Rose Has Its Thorn

We both lie silently still In the dead of the night

Although we both lie close together We feel miles apart inside

Was it something I said or something I did

Did the words not come out right

Though I tried not to hurt you Though I tried

But I guess that's why they say

Every rose has its thorn

Just like every night has its dawn

Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn Yeah it does

I listen to our favorite song Playing on the radio

Hear the DJ say loves a game of easy come and Easy go

But I wonder does he know Has he ever felt like this

And I know that you'd be here right now

If I could have let you know somehow I guess

Every rose has its thorn

Just like every night has its dawn

Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn

Though it's been a while now I can still feel so much pain

Like a knife that cuts you the wound heals But the scar, that scar remains

I know I could have saved a love that night If I'd known what to say

Instead of makin' love We both made our separate ways

And now I hear you found somebody new

And that I never meant that much to you

To hear that tears me up inside And to see you cuts me like a knife I guess

Every rose has its thorn

Just like every night has its dawn

Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn

Father and Son

It's not time to make a change, just re-lax, take it easy,

You're still young, that's your fault,  there's so much you have to know,

Find a girl, settle down, if you want, you can marry,

Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy . . . .

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy . . .

to be calm, when you've found something going on,

but take your time, think a lot, think of everything you've got,

for you will still be here to-morrow, but your dreams may not

How can I try to ex-plain?    When I do , he turns a-way again!

It's always been the same,   the same old story, . . . .

From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen,

Now there's a way, but I know that I have to go away, I know I have to go

It's not time to make a change, just sit down, take it slowly,

You're still young, that's you're fault  there's so much you have to go through,

Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry,

Look at me , I am old, but I'm happy

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy . . .

to be calm, when you've found something going on,

but take your time, think a lot, think of everything you've got,

for you will still be here to-morrow, but your dreams may not

All the times that I have cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,

It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it!

If they were right, I'd a-gree, but it's them, they know, not me,

Now there's a way, and I know that I have to go away,

I know I have to go
